Family trips are a lot of fun and the worst part is usually coming home! However, you can ease the transition back to home with these 8 Road Trip Organization Tips from getting organized AFTER a trip!
Family Road Trip Organization Tips
We take a lot of family road trips throughout the year. With family and friends out-of-state, we make it a habit of seeing them pretty regularly. So our kids have become great travelers! It has not always been smooth and it has certainly improved because the kids have gotten older.
One of the hardest parts of a road trip is coming home! The day of our return I start to dread all that has to be done when we get home to get acclimated back into our usual routine. This topic is fresh in my mind and we most recently went to a family wedding in North Carolina. I’ve come to realize that certain things I do right away when I get home lessen the blow of our return. It isn’t always easy and sometimes I’d rather just flop on the couch and avoid the bags of dirty clothes and grocery list to be made. However, I feel so much better if I get these things done upon my return.
Today I am sharing 8 Tips for Getting Organized After A Family Road Trip!
Take Everything Out of the Car
This is my number one rule! Everyone pitches in to take everything their hands can carry out of the car. Every empty water bottle, book, suitcase and food wrapper gets taken out of the car. Already I can breathe a little easier–AHH!
Start a Load of Laundry
As soon as everything is brought into the house, I take the suitcases with all of the dirty laundry immediately to the laundry room. Before I leave the room I start the first load of laundry. Usually after I have done a few other things, I can come back and switch the load and start another one!
Bring Life Back Into the House
Light a candle or turn on oil diffuser! Our house tends to smell musty after we’ve been gone. Bringing in some good smells helps bring life back into the house. Also, if it’s not too cold, I open a few windows and let in some fresh air!
Bring All Bags to Final Destination
Take all remaining bags and luggage to the appropriate rooms. Just not having to see the bags in my sight makes me feel less cluttered. Sometimes my family obliges me and take everything out of their bags that day. But most likely it sits in their rooms for a few days until I ask them again.
Make a Grocery List
Typically, on the drive home, I make a grocery list. If we get home at a decent hour, I head to the store. But if not, at least I am ready for the store the next day. We are always ready to eat healthy after a trip. So our list is loaded with fruits, veggies and healthy proteins!
Clean the Car
Goes without saying that after a trip the car is D-I-R-T-Y. Goldfish crackers, Cheerios, dirt, everything has found a home in our car. It feels so good to get back to a clean car. The day after a trip I vacuum the car and if needed get it washed as well! I empty all the cup holders and compartments where leftover food and drinks have been placed.
Organize Mail and Newspapers
If you’ve been gone a few days most likely the mail and papers have piled up! Take this opportunity to sit down on the couch and leisurely go through all of your paperwork. I do this step last just so I can sit down and take a break!
Dream About Your Next Vacation
Relax and dream about your next vacation! It’s always good to come home and get back into a routine. But sometimes, to take away the vacation blues, we talk about where we would like to go to next. It’s fun to plan and dream!
The holidays are coming up so that means road trips for many families. The next time you head out on a trip, consider doing some of these things to get you back to the usual routine!
