Friday Favorites: Fun Summer Days, Keeping it Simple and School Lunch Ideas

Hi there! I hope you are having a great week! I keep saying this, but it is hard to believe another summer week has gone by! My kids are officially half way through summer break and I  wish it wasn’t going so fast! Today, as usual, I am wrapping up my week with my Friday Favorites. I am linking up with  Erika, Narci and Andrea for this post!

Cookie Taste Testing

In case you missed my post on Monday, I shared a fun snack activity that your kids will go NUTS over! My kids were so excited when I surprised them with a cookie taste test activity.

I created a ballot (you can download if you’d like to have your own taste test!) and the kids got to taste test five different Oreo flavors. I mixed in a few store bought brands too since I wanted to mix it up with fun flavors!

It was so fun that every time one of the kid’s friends comes over, they set up the taste test for them!

Snow Cone Machine Fun

I wanted to share another fun activity that we did this week. We made snow cones with our own Snow Cone maker! I love that this gadget/appliance is easy enough for the kids to use and it does not require a lot of supplies! (Just ice and juice or syrup!)

You just grind the ice into the machine and then scoop out in the ice into paper cups or in our case bowls! Instead of syrup, we use fruit juice or soda.

It is a perfect summer treat. It is one of our favorite kitchen appliances! Now that I just bought a big bag of ice from the store, we will be having a lot of snow cones in our future!

Simple Kitchen Look

The other day I was feeling like my kitchen had gotten a bit too cluttered. Inevitably, our counters are always the holding area for EVERYTHING that comes into the house! So I decided to swap out my galvanized tray for a super simple bowl with fresh fruit. I love using fruit and other consumable items (straws, cups, etc.) as decor!

I removed a few other things from the counters and I am so much happier with the space. It is a lot easier (and FREE) to take things out of a space than it is to add MORE things into a space to make it look good!

After I finished my work in the kitchen, I made a few changes to our mud closet (formerly a coat closet)! With two kids on the swim team, one kid in swim lessons and a lot of trips to the pool and the beach, we go through  A LOT of towels! I found the perfect solution for our towels:)

The towels are now easily accessible and as a bonus they look pretty in this closet! Another example of using functional items as decor!

Nordstrom Deals

Remember when I talked about Hi Sugarplum’s summer collection at Nordstrom? This week I was so happy to see all of the items on sale! Everything is going fast, but I did manage to snag this tropical romper. I had originally ordered this romper back in May but my order was cancelled because it sold out! So, I’m hoping it works out  and I receive this in time for my trip to Florida later this month.

x Hi Sugarplum! Captiva Romper, Main, color, Bright Floral

There are still a lot of great items left! This tank is still left in a few colors and sizes (33% off).

x Hi Sugarplum! Maroma Halter Top, Alternate, color, Hot Pink

This tee would be a good transition piece from summer to fall. There are still a lot of colors remaining.

x Hi Sugarplum! Anna Maria Twist Sleeve Tee, Main, color, Nautical

I’m hoping Hi Sugarplum collaborates with Nordstrom in the near future! The pieces in Hi Sugarplum’s collection were so cute and colorful–just like her blog!

School Lunch Ideas with Yum Boxes

Earlier in today’s post I was lamenting about summer going by too quickly and yet here I am talking about school lunches! Moms– I am sure you can relate,  I am always so motivated at the beginning of the school year to make healthy and creative lunches. However, by the time May (who am I kidding OCTOBER) rolls around I have lost all school lunch making creativity.

However, this year I am bound and determined to keep the motivation going a little while longer. I have been eyeing these Yum Boxes for awhile now and I decided to purchase them this week! I’ve heard great things about them and I’m hoping for some fun lunches. My kids pack their own lunches, but I still help with coming up with lunch ideas with them.

I like that Yum boxes have a bunch of small compartments, so there is a lot of room for choices! Plus it will be easy to clean one container instead of a bunch of little individual containers (that we usually use). My kids tend to eat snacky type lunches instead of typical sandwiches ( I do not know why my kids do not like PB & Js!).

I will be sure to share our lunch meals in these new boxes when the school year begins!

Thank you to Wikibuy for collaborating with me on this post.  Wikibuy gets you better offers, automatically applies the best coupon code at checkout, and lets you know when prices drop on products you’ve viewed and purchased. I used Wikibuy to search for the best deal on these Yumboxes!

That wraps up my Favorites of the week! I hope you have a great weekend and see you back here next week:)

We used to have a snow cone maker but it didn’t work very well! That is smart to use soda in them! I love those lunch boxes!

I was hoping it wouldn’t be a gadget that we wouldn’t but I think because the kids can use it on their own it is a winner!

I love your kitchen. I also like leaving fruit out on my counter as well so the kids can just grab and go. I love the hooks for the beach towels or backpacks as well. I am right there with you on the lunch motivation. My kids would love a sno-cone machine!

Yes the added benefit of having fruit on the counter is that everyone eats fruit more often!
