Kids Night in Box Experience

First things first, I made sure to review all of the instructions before the kids dove into the box.  I love that the instructions are so well thought out and detailed. My big kids can read through the booklet as well.

Since I read through the booklet ahead of time, I decided to do an activity that was slated for later in the process as the first thing. We started with making the chocolate covered pretzels so that while we were doing the rest of the activities, the pretzels would cool.

We used our new candy machine (similar) to melt the chocolate. I have to admit that this little kitchen gadget works so well…better than when we melt chocolate in our microwave!

The pretzels, the candy melts and sprinkles were included in the box. This is why I love this subscription box…just about everything you need is included!! Plus you always get more than enough of the supplies you need. We actually are left with a half of a bag of the melts and a lot of sprinkles!

Next, we went back to the beginning of the instruction booklet and started on the rest of the activities. The theme of the box was Give Thanks and how appropriate for this season of gratitude. It was a great topic to discuss and collaborate on as a family.  All of the activities were age appropriate for my three kids ages six through eleven.

The theme of the other snack was based on the included book, Thanks, from the Very Hungry Caterpillar. We don’t own the book, so we were excited to add this one to our collection. As with all of Eric Carle’s book, it is beautifully illustrated.

I had all intentions of making this snack as it looks SO CUTE! But, I was short on time and I’ll admit that I did not have all of the required ingredients. It is certainly a snack idea I will save for a rainy day!

We read the book together as a family. I love that a book is included in the box. It gives a chance for my big kids to be involved by reading the book to the rest of the family.

Then, we started on the gratitude hands activity. As instructed, my youngest put his own hands in the illustrated hands. We talked about how easy it is to give thanks. Everyone shared different people that they want to thank for helping them. The booklet gave us ideas for how to express our thanks to others.

The next activity was about showing gratitude to the environment. We read about why the environment needs our help.

We gathered soil from our yard and then put the butterfly paper (which contains the seeds) into the garden bag. We can’t wait to see these flowers grow!

Now it was time to get out that pretzel snack we made earlier. I am glad we made this snack ahead of time! The instructions told us to make a cute butterfly gratitude bag and to give to someone special to us. We decided to make the butterfly for my husband. He was headed on a trip the next day so the kids decided to put it in his suitcase.

The kids were happy we had an extra few pretzels for us to enjoy:)

Lastly, we worked on the leaf art project. We were provided with a marker, crayons, watercolor paint and drawing paper. The big kids took the lead on this craft and each made a piece of art.

The first step was drawing leaves and then filling in the leaves with crayons. Then, they used watercolor paint all over the paper.

The final step was to write things they are thankful for around the leaves. We opted to leave off the words.  I think these came out so pretty and I might try to frame them for fall decor next year!

This is such a cute idea. I’ve seen those snack bags be turned into butterflies before, and I love it! That leaf craft is really awesome too – they turned out great.
