Clear the Clutter Week 4: Kids Room Organization

Today we start Week Four of the Clear the Clutter Challenge! I hope that you have been able to tackle a few decluttering projects around your home this month! This week we are working on Kid Spaces! I don’t know about you but my kids spaces are always a work in progress! My goal is always to make it easy for my kids to be able to clean their room quickly and easily! When I notice that it is getting too messy and disorganized, I know it is time to declutter! My boys share a pretty big bedroom and they love to play in it. So we have set up some organization systems in place to make it easy for them to clean up after an afternoon of playing! I will share ideas for How to Organize a Kids Shared Bedroom!

Choose Functional Storage Solutions

When you have kids sharing a room, you need very functional storage solutions! More kids equals more stuff! Sometimes, you might be find solutions that are outside of the box! Our favorite storage piece in the boys room is these lockers we found on a Facebook resale site. The boys can store so much stuff in these lockers! I love that the lockers will grow with the boys and as they get older, toys can be replaced with sports equipment and other personal items!

We also utilize every inch of this large bookcase. (available here on SALE!) Find pieces that will hold up over time and that will grow with your kids!

Designate Individual Spots in the Room

It is important to establish some individuality in a shared bedroom! Each child has their own likes and interests and a shared space should reflect each child’s personality! You can do this by designating certain areas of the room for each child.

The kids can each have a desk, specific drawer(s) or shelf that is theirs alone! Let each child store what they want in this space. This also helps to maintain clutter if you give each child one specific spot that they can use as they want.

Emily at the Journey of Parenting has some great ideas on how to get your kids to declutter! My favorite tip she suggests is to set limits on what kids can keep displayed. For instance, if you child has a ton of stuffed animals, set a number for how many he can keep. This idea gives kids a sense of control but also keeps the clutter at bay!

A storage trunk, like this one, is a great way to store kids’ mementos and keepsakes! Each of my kids has a trunk or large toy bin that we keep things they have had since birth! When the trunk gets too full, we go through it and evaluate what we want to continue to hold on to! The bonus of a nice trunk is that the kids can take it with them to college! This trunk is actually mine from college!

Use Wall Space

You need to use every inch of room in a shared space. Therefore, you need to think vertical space when planning out the room. Use tall bookcases (secured to the wall), lockers and hooks to maximize the wall. Hooks are a great way to organize back packs, robes, towels and clothes! We have several spots with hooks both inside and outside the boys’ closet.

Keep Stuff to a Minimum

Unfortunately, decluttering is not a one and done process! Every time you take in a new item,  you have to evaluate where it goes and what you can rid of in its place. Kids especially acquire new things constantly. Whether it is a favor from a birthday party or a gift from a holiday, the intake of new stuff never ends!!

We have gotten in the habit of doing a family clean up on Sunday evening. Everyone pitches in and cleans their own spaces, plus any family spaces that need attention. These clean ups are a great opportunity for us to clear out papers and other stuff we no longer need. If you make it a habit to regularly clean and declutter, it won’t become such a big chore!

Use the KonMari Method for Kid’s Clothing

Last week, I organized the boys’ pajama and t-shirt drawers using the KonMari method and what a difference it made! I added so much space to each of the boy’s drawers.

BEFORE

When you have kids sharing a room, you need all the drawer and closet space you can get. As the kids get older, I know their bigger size clothing will take up more space. So I am trying to establish good organization habits now…and I made sure to get the boys on board. They put away their clothes, so I am sure hoping they can stick to the KonMari method!

Be sure to pare down your clothing when you are organizing. Determine how many of each clothing item you truly need! For instance, ten pairs of pajamas is probably too many!

I am so pleased with how our Sauder pieces have held up too! The lockers were a funny story–as you can imagine –trying to fit them in a minivan. And they required like 10 cans of spray paint!
