Kids Night in Box: September Unboxing

My family had another fun evening with the Kids Night in Box. The September Kids Night in Box theme was Nutrition Explorer and we had a chance to talk about ways to try new foods.

Kids Night in Box: Nutrition Explorers

We have so much fun when we receive our Kids Night in Box. It has been a great way for our family to be intentional with our family time. As a benefit, we learn new things and have some great discussions. This month’s Kids Night in Box was a perfect theme for my somewhat crew of picky eaters!

As I have talked about in our previous Kids Night in Box recaps, everything you need for the activities is included in the box, with the exception of a few food ingredients.

You can read about one of our previous Kids Night in Box HERE!

Our September Kids Night in Box Experience

Last week, the boys and I decided to work on the Kids Night in Box one day after school. I didn’t have a chance beforehand to look through all of the instructions, so we went through the box together. There were a lot of fun activities related to nutrition and health.

We started by reading the Good Enough to Eat book. It was an extremely comprehensive book that explained concepts like carbohydrates, hydration and the food groups. My fifth grader said several times throughout reading the book that he was learning something new. If anything, I’d say the book was a little tricky for my six year old to completely grasp but he seemed to get the main concepts.

Next, we dove right into the fun crafts and activities in the Kids Night in Box. My older son wanted to work on the Vegetable Oil Paint Canvas project. He had so much fun creating vegetable creatures. The instruction booklet suggested keeping the artwork on display while you work on the Nutrition Challenge. More on that in a second!

My younger son wanted to work on the My Healthy Journal booklet where he used stickers to document what he had eaten for the day.

While both kids were working, we took a look at the food pyramid included in the instruction booklet and documented foods that we have in our home in each category. The instruction booklet included a fun binocular craft to allow kids to actually “hunt” for the foods in the home. But, we opted to sit and talk rather than hunt:)

Next, we talked about the importance of exercise. We got to use the fidget spinner to spin to different exercises including jumping jacks and push-ups! It was nice to get our bodies moving!

We finished off the September Kids Night in Box with the Veggie Straws Snacks. As suggested, my son read over the nutrition facts of the veggie straws packet and then we discussed what things to look for on  labels.September Kids Night in Box Review

This activity led to some really great discussions on healthy snack ideas!

Our Review of this Month’s Box

The Nutrition Explorers theme was another great box for us! We had some great conversations about food and branching out of our food comfort zone. Both kids came up with several foods that they are willing to give a try. MAJOR WIN!

The box also came with instructions for a 10 Day Nutrition Challenge. Each day has a different nutrition challenge. The challenges are easy and achievable.

We set some guidelines for the nutrition challenge and even decided on a prize for those that complete the challenge. I am hopeful that the this challenge will be a great motivation tool for my picky eaters!
