Easy Way to Add Curb Appeal to Front Porch

Sometimes we can get the best ideas for our home by taking a walk in our own neighborhood. I love checking out my neighbors’ front doors and yards to get inspiration for our own home. The homes in our neighborhood are all pretty unique but there are a few houses on my street that are the most similar to my own.

So, when I spotted new house numbers on my neighbor’s front porch, I immediately texted her to find out where she had gotten them. When I found out she had gotten the metal house numbers from Home Depot, I was so excited. The numbers are inexpensive and I was able to get them right away!

Metal house numbers can be very expensive and I have been eyeing them for several years. But I had not wanted to bite the bullet and tackle this super easy project. Once I gathered up the numbers (I did have to go to a few stores to get all four numbers), we were able to complete this project in minutes!

Your front door is the typically the main focal point of your home when you come up the driveway. So, by focusing on a few small details, you can really add curb appeal to your home!

Where to Buy Metal House Numbers

As I mentioned, I was able to get our metal house numbers from Home Depot. There are several places you can find these numbers. It depends on what you are looking for in terms of style.

We selected these 5 inch Raised Black Metal Numbers. I like the numbers are elevated so that they really stick out against the white column on our porch.

Since we have a thin column, the numbers can not be too wide. Be sure to test out the numbers in the spot you plan to install them before you take the numbers out of the package!

The one thing you want to make sure of when you purchase house numbers is that you can actually see your address from the street!

Our old house address sign was very small and it was pretty often that delivery personnel was not able to read our numbers from the street. While silver colored house numbers look nice too, they can be difficult to read if you have a lighter colored house. You want your numbers to stand out against the background. Ideally, you will want address letters that are 4 inches tall or larger.

If you want your house numbers to stand you, you could choose a thicker font like these.

You can spend a lot of money on metal house numbers and there are higher end stores that sell these for a lot more. But, why spend more money when you do not have to!

Metal House Number Options

How to Install House Numbers to Front Porch

Depending on what type of metal house numbers you purchase, you may have a few different options for mounting them to your home. The metal numbers we purchased had two options. We could either mount them flush to the home or we could elevate the numbers away from the house.

We choose to elevate the numbers to make them really stand out.

Once we were ready to hang them, my husband held up the numbers and I stood at the end of the driveway to see how they looked. This step was important in making sure we could see the numbers well.

Then, you will want to decide where the numbers will go before you install them to the wall. The number kit allows you to use the package to assist with measuring exactly where the numbers will go.

Then,  husband drilled holes into our aluminum wrapped column.

Next, my husband gently pushed the numbers into the drilled holes. He also very lightly hammered the numbers into place.

How far to space house numbers?

It is pretty easy to measure out numbers so that they are spaced evenly. Again, the kit allows you to pencil in exactly where you need to drill.  You will  want to space the numbers out 1-2 inches  part. Make sure to double check your work before you start drilling!

One lesson we learned was that the number 6’s dipped below where the holes were drilled. So we ended up with our sixes a little closer together. Unfortunately, since we already drilled the holes, we had to leave the numbers as is.

Ideally, you will want to measure from the absolute bottom of the number to get even spacing.

Looks great. Last summer when we painted our house we looked for new numbers but didn’t find – I think Home Depot was out of 1s and 2s or something – and we ended up having the house painters paint the numbers we already had. They look pretty good I think!

I was surprised I could not find all of the numbers at one store and I was not willing to pay shipping. So I had to go to 3 stores!
