Take a look on Pinterest and Instagram and you will see gorgeous Christmas home displays that are decorated with entirely new pieces each year.

Perhaps you can relate and you struggle with how to incorporate your old with your new Christmas decor. Here are 5 Tips for Mixing Old and Sentimental with New Christmas Decorations.

So, consider not overhauling your entire Christmas display every year. Instead, embrace your sentimental and old Christmas decorations. You just might have an old item that becomes super popular again!

3.TIE IN A COLOR THEME

Another way to mix old and new Christmas decorations together is to tie them together with a similar color scheme. This really helps old and new look like a natural fit.

You do not need to have the items match identically in color. Just try to tie in at least one similar color into your display. It really makes Christmas decorations look seamless when the items tie into a color theme.

4. PICK YOUR FAVORITES

You may have a lot of hand me down or sentimental Christmas decorations. Just because you have sentimental Christmas decorations, does not mean you need to use everything.

Perhaps the first thing you need to do before decorating for Christmas, is to go through your boxes of decorations.

First, decide if an old Christmas decoration is really meaningful to you. Do you remember when you got it? Is it from a family member? Really consider if it is a decoration that you love instead of something you are just hanging on to because you feel like you have to.

It is okay to part with part of a larger collection of something if it no longer brings meaning to you. Perhaps, save one of something instead of getting rid of it all. This same rule can apply to homemade Christmas decorations made lovingly by your kids. Pick your favorites!

If you are really struggling with letting go of sentimental items, put them in a box for one year and see how you feel about it the next season. However, chances are, if you do not want to display the item this year, then you will not want to put it out next year.

One final note, do not feel like you need to hang onto every single ornament you have every gotten. For instance, does your child have several Baby’s First Christmas ornaments? Pick the favorites and let go of the rest. We do not need to burden our kids with a massive collection of ornaments or Christmas decorations when they move out of the home. Chances are, they will want to start their own collections save for a few special pieces.

5. PUT CHRISTMAS DECOR IN NEW LOCATIONS

When you put home decor in a new location, it can bring new life to the piece. The same thing can be true for Christmas decorations. If you’ve always put your Christmas tree in one spot, consider moving it to a new location.

Tip: Christmas tree ornaments can be displayed in other ways. Consider grouping similar ornaments on a shelf or in bowl.
