It is hard to believe that we are on week four of the Clear the Clutter Challenge! This challenge has really given me the push I needed to get some spaces organized in our house. Next month, we will continue the challenge, but will slow it down a bit. More details on that later! Today, we are focusing on the office and master bedroom! Each week I am co-hosting this challenge with Keri and Kate, so be sure to check out their organized spaces as well!
Keri shared how she creates kid spaces without having an actual playroom. Love her play spaces throughout her house!
Kate shared her toy organization using her adorable storage hutch (that she painted herself!)
Blogger Feature
I am so inspired by the bloggers who link up with us. There were so many great spaces this week! Debbie from Two Plus Me and You has a colorful and organized play room! I love how she stores the dress up clothes and the dollhouse bookcase is so sweet!
Clear the Clutter Challenge: Office and Bedroom
Now, on to this week’s challenge. Originally, I had planned on just focusing on my office. But I got a little motivated and organized a few areas in my master bedroom as well.
Each week of the challenge, I have been answering five organization questions before I dive into the space. This week, I answered these questions for my office (my bedroom was in good enough shape that it just needed a clean up).
- What is my end goal with the space? To have systems in place to prevent major paperwork pile ups.
- What is currently working in the space? I have enough space between my desk, dresser and closets for the potential for the room to be organized.
- What is NOT working in the space? Piles accumulate quickly, the office is a dumping ground for paperwork, donations and wrapping paper and gifts.
- What tools (baskets/bins/labels) do I already have to complete the space? Desk, dresser, closets
- Is there anything I need to buy to help reach my end goal? Over the door rack for tote bags, wall hanging file for paperwork
Here are a few of my before pictures:
This room was a total dumping ground for everything that did not have a place in our house! Funny enough, we had just one set of curtains up for the last few months. I was so unmotivated to finish the job!
My first step was finding home for everything that did not belong in this room! I also had several boxes of items for donation stored in here, so I took them straight out to the car and dropped them off at Goodwill the next time I was out.
I went through all of the papers and filed them away or throw them out. One thing I’d like to purchase, but I didn’t have time before the challenge is some wall hanging file organizers. I’d like to have one that has 3 spots-one for school stuff for the kids, one slot for bills/home paperwork and one slot for the blog. I’m eyeing these styles:
One purchase I did make was to get an over the door hook organizer. We have one in our master bedroom and it is perfect for hanging robes and extra towels. I am using this one in the office for tote bags that I use often.
We have two very small closets in this room. I use one to store out of season clothes (mine) and the other for gift wrap and actual gifts. The gift closet needs some attention and as it not very well organized and I had a hard time finding things. I neglected to take a before picture but believe me it was messy! I was able to get rid of a lot of things and clear out room to add our keepsake boxes in here (more on these in a second). All of our gift bags are stored in an old magazine holder and all of our ribbons and gift wrap supplies in all of the are in the plastic storage drawers.
I store my actual wrapping paper in a wire basket (from Target) in the room. It looks pretty and is easy to grab when I need it!
As I mentioned, I was able to bring in the kid’s keepsake boxes that were being stored in an inconvenient spot elsewhere in the house. Now these are all at easy reach! I can’t recommend these storage boxes enough! I designated two boxes for each of the kids and one for my husband and me. We have one box to store mementos from our travels and one specifically for our Disney trips. The kids have one box in their rooms to store whatever they would like to hold on to and we keep one box in this closet that has most of their keepsakes (awards, certificates, ribbons, class pictures, etc). When the box gets too full, we look through everything and see if we can get rid of anything. Eventually I will get another box for each of the kids when needed. But these boxes really cut down on the memento clutter!
I had been dreading getting this room organized because it seemed like a LARGE task! But, sometimes you just have to dive in and get started and then the motivation kicks in!
This room is rarely used as a guest room as we usually give guests our daughter’s room (that has an adjacent bathroom to it). But it’s nice to have this room ready in case we do have a guest stay in here!
I am making a promise with myself to not let my room get so bad again! I love having a clean and serene place to blog, so hopefully keeping that in mind will help me stay on track!
Master Bedroom Organization
While I was in an organization mode, I worked on my bedroom and cleaned up and cleared out a few things as well! Over the last few years, I have made some improvements in how I store accessories and jewelry and it has worked out well, so I’m sharing some of my ideas.
I’ve realized that if I see my jewelry, scarves and purses, I am more likely to actually use them! So, I’ve found ways to display them that also look nice in the room. I purchased this necklace and bracelet holder after I saw it on my mom’s dresser and I love it. Previously, all of my jewelry was in a dresser drawer or a jewelry box and I honestly found that I forgot about items I owned!
I also recently added this wire bin from Walmart on my dresser to display some of my most used clutches. I remember to use these purses when I see them!
Bracelet and Necklace Organizer
For the rest of my purses, I use a large storage trunk at the end of my bed. Since our master bedroom is not that large, and we don’t have a ton of closet space, I need to get creative with storage!
This trunk holds all of my large tote bags and purses, plus some of my out of season scarves.
The last little spot in my room for storing accessories is this earring and scarf organizer (from Kohls a few years ago) next to my dresser. Honestly, I gravitate towards the same 2 or 3 earring sets, but it’s nice to have options. I store my small/stud earrings in a bowl on my dresser.
It was great to focus on a a few spots that tend to be the last priorities in our home. I hope I can keep these rooms organized for awhile!
Clear the Clutter Challenge
As I mentioned, we are slowing down the pace of the challenge now and focusing on one space per MONTH. In February, we will take on photo storage. Send help! I’ve got a lot of work to do in this area! Hope to see you back here next month!
Be sure to join our Facebook group to share your space with us or use the hashtag #cleartheclutterchallenge and tag us on Instagram! We will continue to be posting regularly, so be sure to stay connected!

I’m a big fan of wall hangers! They are so cute and great for storage! Love your ideas here!
I love your guest room! It’s so great to have keepsake boxes easily accessible – those things can get out of hand really fast. Love your ideas this week!
the after looks so good! I love how bright your guest room is! I’ve always wanted to put a bed in front of windows but we don’t have a room in this house where it would work!
Two things- 1. I know this post is about de-cluttering BUT I spotted a Sail Bag and love it- have one- best investment ever- do you love it? 2. Love your jewelry hangers and so need to invest in some
Isn’t it awesome when something you have dreaded comes together and actually makes you feel better?! You did an awesome job – your guest room looks so peaceful and welcoming!
I am so motivated to get in my office and organize it now! Thanks for the tips!
Great tips, clutter free is a MUST for me!
I’m trying so hard to be more organized this year! This is helpful.
I absolutely LOVE the storage hutch! It’s gorgeous!
Your after pictures look great! Having a calm and clutter-free office space to blog is AMAZING! I can focus more on my business instead of what needs to be done in the room to make it more functional, haha!
