We ditched the traditional Christmas colors in our basement playroom for Colorful Christmas Decor. When you have kids, it is fun to take a whimsical and playful approach to Christmas decorating. Our basement playroom was the perfect space to create a colorful Winter Wonderland!

Colorful Christmas Decor
Yesterday, we had out first snowfall of the season. It was a really pretty snow. The kind that sticks to the tree branches and makes the yard look like a giant snow globe. It was the perfect excuse to stay indoors and to not get out of pajamas. The only problem I had with the snow is that I had wanted to put Christmas decor out on my front porch. (Then share that space with you!). Since, the weather did not cooperate, I stayed indoors and finished up decorating our basement playroom.
The decor inspiration for the basement playroom all started with a Colorful Pom Garland that I spotted earlier in the season. My mind went running on how I could use this Christmas pom garland in my home.
I have always loved colorful Christmas decorations in theory, but I actually have stuck to more traditional colors of red and green. I did not think I could seamlessly tie in colorful Christmas decor into my traditional home. I’ve talked about how I tie in our old and new Christmas decorations.
This year is a time that we can especially use a little extra Christmas cheer. So I finally decided to take the plunge and decorate a room in colorful Christmas decor!
The rest of our house is decked in traditional Christmas decorations. But, since the playroom is in our basement, it was easy to make this stand alone room a lot more colorful.
Our Christmas Playroom Tour
Last year, my husband finished our basement which has two rooms, a playroom and a movie room. Our playroom is used for many of our toys, plus for playing video games and working out. The kids like to bring their friends to the basement so they can have their own space.
Stay tuned for a Christmas tour of our movie room. I am waiting for a few things to arrive and then I will be sure to give you a peak!
So, since our room is used for many things, mostly to play, I wanted to keep the Christmas decorations light and fun! I purchased several colorful Christmas decorations including my favorite Pom Garland. But, I was also able to incorporate a lot of seasonal and non seasonal decorations into the Christmas theme!
Our basement does not get a lot of light. So, unfortunately, these pictures do not really capture the colorful tones of the decor. Trust me that the Christmas decorations are really bright and colorful!
7 Ft Flocked Pencil Tree
We have had a Christmas tree in our basement, or any playroom for that matter. So, I was excited to get our very first flocked tree for our basement. I LOVE this tree. It is narrow and could fit into the smallest of spaces.
I am going to keep my eye out after Christmas for another sale on this tree. I would love to get one of these trees to use in our master bedroom next year! This tree is a great value. The tree is pre-lit with white lights and the flocking is perfect.

Colorful Christmas Garlands and Mantle
I love to use garland to decorate around pictures and on the fireplace mantle.
MONEY SAVING TIP: GARLAND CAN BE EXPENSIVE. TO MAKE ONE STRAND GO FARTHER, CUT IT UP INTO SMALLER PIECES.
I used one strand of Snowflake garland to decorate several pictures.
Another tip is to layer several strands of garland for a more dramatic look. I got this “Feliz Navidad” Garland this year and it ties in well with our colorful Pottery Barn stockings.

These colorful star ornaments really pop on the mantle. They were only $3 from Target.
I really try to incorporate our year round decor into our Christmas decorations. There are so many ways to tie in seasonal and non seasonal decorations. For instance, our buffalo sign just got a little bead garland and it is instantly a Christmas decoration.
Felt Christmas Trees
One of my favorite Target finds this season were these mini felt trees. The MERRY light up sign is also a new favorite. This area is the first thing you see coming down to the basement.
Whimsical Christmas Shelves
Another new favorite Christmas decoration is this mini metal car! There are so many vehicles to choose from and I want one of each of them.
I started with three cars and I am hoping to get more of these pieces after Christmas on sale.
Last year, I shared a tip on this blanket ladder. To save money, I used $5 scarves from Target for the blankets! It is a lot cheaper than buying Christmas blankets (and it takes up a lot less storage space).
One of our favorite Christmas toys is the Little People Nativity set. I plan to keep this set forever!
Merry and Bright Christmas Decor
Our basement is the warmest spot in the house in the winter (and coolest spot in the summer). So, we have the perfect excuse to hang out in our playroom and look at our merry and bright Christmas decor.
I wish you could all come over and hang out in our colorful Christmas playroom. Since we will be staying at home a lot this Christmas season, it was fun to create a space that we will being cozy in.
