How to Tie Dye Shirts with Kids
Are you looking for a fun rainy or summer day craft with your kids? We are sharing how to tie dye shirts with kids. It is easier than you think!
Hi there! I hope you are having a good week! It’s been a busy few days here as I just got back from a girls weekend away and now, my husband and I are headed to Florida with our good friends. However, despite being a little squeezed for time, the kids and I decided to spend a little time TIE DYEING! Last week, I talked about our trip to the craft store and how we made several craft purchases. This easy Tie Dyeing kit was too good to pass up! We have done other tie dyeing activities but this was the first time I bought an actually kit. I wanted to share all the details on this easy project!
I love easy crafts with the kids. It is an activity we can usually all come together on. Plus, it allows us to spend a few moments of screen free and distraction free time together. Tie Dyeing is activity that is good for all ages. True story, my two older kids and I tie dyed while I was pregnant with my third child. We made a couple onesies and baby socks–too cute!
This Tie Dye Kit is my FAVORITE! It came with everything we needed except for the items you want to tie dye. I was able to find $3 white shirts at our local craft store.

I was hoping to do this activity outside but we had a rainy day. So we set things up indoors. I love this kit because there was minimal mixing and set up required! All we had to do was fill the squirt bottles to the line with water and shake the bottle! Could not be any easier!
I was a bit nervous about the mess but it was actually pretty well contained. Except I was somehow the only one of the group not wearing gloves….so I was a bit messy!
The kit came with instructions on making several different tie dye patterns. Each of the kids decided on their own technique and got to work.
My daughter went with a traditional spiral design.
My youngest tried a one color rippled pattern. He also dyed a pair of socks:)
I’ll admit that I did not get a lot of pictures because I was busy helping everyone! Oh well! The hardest part was waiting on them to be finished! The items had to dry for 6-8 hours and then go in the washing machine!
Lesson learned: Make sure ALL of your fabric is saturated as we did end up with some white on our shirts!
Our friends’ designs came out so cute too! Love the ombre pants!!
My little guy was the most excited about his tie dye socks:)
Sometimes it seems like more work than it is worth to do a craft with the kids. But, a few minutes of clean up is worth the fun and the memories of a craft day!
I think I have about checked off most of our craft ideas for the summer though. Do you have any fun projects that you have done with your kids lately?
I like the combo of white and color as it looks fresh!
I was just thinking that I needed to tie-dye with my girls before summer was over!!
Looks like a fun project to do with kids.
I love tie-dying! It’s one of my favorite memories with some of my best friends! But I have never had that many color options. I love it!
Oh, wow! Those look great! Did your kit come with ALL of those colors?
This is such a fun craft to do with kids! I have made these with my kids and grand kids and all love it!
How cute! My oldest niece and nephew LOVE crafts, so we’ve been bringing them to the library this summer to do some, but this is one i’ll have to keep in mind.
