How to Plan a Family Halloween Party This Year
Are you looking for a safe and fun way to celebrate Halloween this year? Today I am sharing all of the details on how to throw an at home Halloween party for your family! Or as we like to call our Halloween celebration a “Boo Bash”.
WHAT TO INCLUDE IN AN AT HOME HALLOWEEN PARTY
This year, we will all be looking for ways to celebrate Halloween in new ways. When planning an at home Halloween Party, you can decide to keep it simple or make it elaborate! There are no rules when it comes to Halloween fun!
However, there are a few things I suggest you include in your family Halloween bash:
- Halloween Themed Food
- Spooky (or not so scary) decorations
- Fun Activities
- Halloween Music
- Costume or Halloween themed outfits
- A family friendly Halloween Movie
PLAN A FUN MENU
First things first, you will want to come up with the Halloween party menu. This is the really fun part of the planning process!
My kids and I brainstormed food ideas together to come up with our Halloween party menu. As you can imagine, desserts were the priority! We kept it all fairly simple. As I talked in this post, I am all about taking a ‘semi-homemade’ approach. I like to mix in store bought and easy to make ideas with some fun, more elaborate recipes.
Our menu for the party:
Mummy hotdogs
Halloween Chex Mix
Halloween shaped pasta
Scary apple teeth
Carrots (gotta throw in something healthy)
Iced Sugar Cookies
Rice Krispie treats
Orange Soda
One of our favorite traditions is to make these Mummy Hot Dogs every Halloween. These are so easy to assemble with hot dogs and refrigerated crescent rolls.

If you do not want to bake any Halloween specific treats, you can always bake your favorite dessert and add some Halloween treat toppers! Easy peasy!
It is always nice to include a few healthy Halloween treats, since everyone will be eating so much candy. We like to make these spooky mouths with peanut butter, marshmallows and apple slices.

Halloween Scary Teeth Treats

Baby Carrot Pumpkin Appetizer
These Halloween sprinkles and edible monster eyes were a HUGE hit as cupcake toppings for the cupcakes!

DECORATE YOUR HOUSE
I actually picked up some of the supplies before deciding to have a Boo Bash. As soon as the Halloween decorations start coming out, I look for things that I could use throughout the season for a fun night or event.
I sometimes get small gifts for the kids for the holiday. I ended up getting each of the kids a Beenie Boo and Halloween mints to give as favors at our bash.
You probably already have some Halloween decorations on hand, so hopefully you do not need to buy too much.
Keep it simple and buy some Halloween paper plates and cups. It is the little details of a party that go a long way.
HALLOWEEN PARTY DETAILS
Sometimes the build up to a party is just as exciting to the actual event. Create anticipation for your family Halloween party by setting a date and time. You could even let the kids create Halloween party invitations and pass them out to everyone in the family.
Pick a time that you can devote a few hours to putting it all together! It could be a lunch time party or a Friday evening. You will want to make sure you can devote a few hours to the Halloween fun!

MAKE IT A FAMILY ACTIVITY
It's way more fun when you can collaborate together as a family. Assign each of the kids a task for the party. Everyone loves to feel like they contributed to the fun. The excitement of the event really built as we were putting it all together.
Rice Krispie treat duty!
Happily working side by side!
He loved being in charge of sugar cookies! Thanks to a boxed recipe it was pretty easy!

Halloween Helpers
My youngest was in charge of mixing the Chex Mix and M & M's. Can we say yuuuuuum?

Halloween Trail Mix
Don't buy these unless you are okay with eating a whole bag! So good!!
Laughing here because every time I tried to take a picture of them, one of them was licking icing off their fingers!!
Pouring drinks for everyone...
SET THE MOOD
Find some good Halloween tunes and get all of your Halloween decor on display! We listened to this station on Amazon!
TIME TO CELEBRATE
Now for the best party--PARTY! You've done all the work so now it's time to enjoy! The reactions on my kids faces was truly priceless. Kids truly enjoy the little things! They aren't looking for perfection. They just want to have a fun time with their parents and family. I think we made that happen that afternoon.

What a fun night! I agree – keep things simple and semi-homemade. The kids will remember a fun time with family, not how long mom spent preparing elaborate dishes!
Exactly. My kids prefer simple, healthy meals anyway. It’s really about the quality time. Thanks for reading!
