It is hard to believe it has been over three years ago since we completely remodeled our kitchen. Our main mission for the project were to create an open kitchen with a big island We also wanted to incorporate a modern farmhouse kitchen look.
Today, I am sharing some of the decor elements we used to create a modern farmhouse kitchen look! I didn’t want to add a lot of decor that wouldn’t just clutter up the space. So, I searched for farmhouse pieces that were both functional and stylish.
These are some of my favorite fixer upper style kitchen decor ideas!

Fixer Upper Kitchen Remodel
Our original kitchen had two windows, neither of which brought in a lot of light. So, we wanted to open up the space to make it more light and bright. This required taking down a wall between our kitchen and our dining room. I should mention hired a contractor for our entire project. (We are no Chip and Joanna!)
The stairwell leading up to our second floor was also opened up. We really wanted to an open floor plan.
We also were adding on to the back of our house at the same time. It was truly an experience as we had to “live” out of our basement including setting up a make shift kitchen. These four months of minor inconveniences were all worth it!
We ended up with a space that we truly love to spend time in. The kitchen is really the hub of our home.
Farmhouse Kitchen Decor Ideas
Whether or not you are planning on a full scale kitchen remodel, you can still add some decor elements that can give your kitchen a farmhouse look. Here are some of my favorite pieces that really pull a kitchen together and make it both styled and functional!
(1.) Multi-Tiered Stand
Tiered trays are so much fun! They are great for storing some of your smaller decor pieces or, in my case, mugs! Also, if you like decorating for the holiday/season, a tiered tray is a great way to “contain” your seasonal decor! Instead of covering every inch of my kitchen with holiday touches, I tend to stick to certain spots and just rotate out the smaller pieces.
There are so many ways to style a tiered stand. I have a Pinterest board dedicated to tray styling! I love rotating out my Rae Dunn mugs for the season or holiday! You can even use a tiered stand for serving food at a party. So many options to use the stand from a function standpoint, but also to showcase some of your favorite decor pieces! A win-win!
My favorite wood tiered stand!

More tiered stand options:
(2.) Baskets and Bowls
Another inexpensive and useful item for the farmhouse kitchen is baskets or bowls to display your fruit and veggies. I have a few of these containers around the kitchen including a two tiered wire basket and a footed bowl. Bonus: find that if I display my fruits and veggies, we are much more likely to eat them!
My exact bowl no longer available. Similar HERE and HERE.
This option from Amazon is a pretty and functional one!
Also, I love these two wire fruit basket options from Crate and Barrel and Target!
(3.) Bread Storage
Another popular functional farmhouse piece is a bread box! We love having our bread handy (our toaster is in a cabinet right below this box). This bread box is one of my most asked about pieces in our kitchen!
I could not find my exact bread box but this one is very similar! I love how it has some distressed details.
(4.) Chalkboards
One of our favorite elements in the kitchen is our framed chalkboard wall! We opted to paint and trim out a wall size chalkboard. But even a smaller framed board would work too! The chalkboard is a great piece to update for the seasons and holidays. Also, a counter top chalkboard is a great option for spaces that don’t allow for bigger pieces! Kids love writing on the board and coming home to surprise messages! I often times opt for quotes and simple phrases on our chalkboard, but it’d be fun to use it as a weekly menu display!

I love this chalkboard that is also an organization system!
(5.) Farmhouse Style Trays and Vases
Contain the clutter and keep your kitchen organized with farmhouse style trays and vases. If you are looking for that fixer upper vibe, look for neutral and rustic pieces to complement your style. This rustic vase gives a farmhouse vibe but also it extremely useful in storing my most used kitchen utensils! Displaying your most used tools and ingredients is a great way to keep them handy plus clear up some drawer and cabinet space!
I like displaying our wooden spoons by the oven because I use them multiple times a day.We keep our most used oils and seasonings near on this white serving tray. I love white serving pieces because they fit into any decor style!!
You might even already have some of these decor pieces around the house that you can use for these purposes. Always shop your house before buying something new!

(6.) Greenery
Nothing says farmhouse chic more than some faux and live plants! Greenery adds so much warmth to a space. While I love using as many live plants, I also like to mix in faux plants! Faux plants are great for spaces that do not get a lot of like!
One of the easiest type of live plants to care for is boxwoods! Real boxwood plants are easy to maintain (just spritz with water every few weeks). I also love ferns and succulents. Think about where you want to put the plants and then determine if the space would get enough light to support a live plant.
Wreaths, succulents and fresh flowers are also great ways to add greenery to the kitchen!
(7.) Farmhouse Shelves
One of my favorite areas of the kitchen is our coffee bar with open shelving. Originally we had planned on more upper cabinets for this spot but I am so happy we opted for shelves.
This area gets a lot of use and is truly one of the most functional but fun places in the kitchen! These rustic shelves are a mix of useful items and decor pieces. I change out them for all of the seasons.

The coffee rack (another farmhouse favorite) is a great way to display all of the mugs!

You’re kitchen is so pretty! I love all of these!
Super cute kitchen and love your styling tips!!
We redid our basement this past year and when we put in our bar, we opted for chalk board paint instead of a back splash and it is the perfect fun decorating element.
Great post as always!

Your basement sounds awesome–have you ever posted any pictures??
These are great ideas! And that wooden tiered stand is GORGEOUS!
I would love it if we had white cabinets! I definitely want a multi-tiered stand and to make room for a chalkboard in our next house.
Your kitchen is gorgeous!! I love the idea of a bread box! We always end up putting the bread on top of the fridge and it looks terrible haha! I also love the 2 tiered wooden stand, I definitely need one of those!
I love the way you decorate and really like all of the tiered tray suggestions
Can you come decorate my kitchen!? Lol. I’m in love with your style. I think the chalkboard is my favorite. I’d have a lot of fun with that.
Love your kitchen! And what a brilliant idea to use tiered stands to hold mugs and other things! Totally going downstairs into my storage to grab mine and copy the idea!!!
I seriously want all of those things! Love it!
the decor is so adorable! I LOVE the mugs!
Thank you Eryka!
I love that multi use tiered serving tray! And I’ve been DYING to put a giant chalkboard in our kitchen!!
Thanks Rachel! The chalkboard is a lot of fun..and functional.
What color paint is in your kitchen? I love it!!!
accessible beige by sherwin williams!
The backsplash looks like Travertine. What tile did you use?
Where are your rugs from
Our kitchen runners are from costco! I got them a few years ago but they still have them every so often!
Your kitchen is beautiful . I have the same granite but horrible cabinets . Do you know what color your cabinets and trim are?
Thank you so much! Our cabinets are a warm white with a coffee glaze over them. Let me know if I can help with anything else!
I love the pendant lights. Where did you get them?
It is from Bellacor lighting!
Hi Jaclyn,
I didn’t see what your reply for the tile backsplash you used. I am having trouble finding something to go with our new granite countertops. I love the aged look and cannot use stark white subway. Our granite has alot of cream, gold, black, some white and taupe variation.
Thank you! Beautiful Kitchen!
Send me a message at jaclyn@coffeepancakesanddreams.com if you have any questions about my kitchen and I’ll try to find the sources!
I am trying to find backsplash you have in your kitchen.
Thank you.
It is from Lowes! I saw it the last time I was in there. We used a darker glaze to give it more of an aged look.
Where did you get your curtain in your kitchen?:-)
I got the fabric from Joann Fabrics and made a no sew valance with some tension rods:)
Jaclyn,
I wish that I have seen your beautiful kitchen color schemes before we painted our cabinets! We have the exact same countertops. I was deciding between grey and a warm white and ended up doing a grey, that looks blue! The paint job turned out great, but the color is to cry about. It is a year later now, and I convinced my husband that we should redo it. The only color I got right was the accessible beige on the walls.
Well, I have learned my lesson and are going to copy your ideas! I have read through the posts and cannot find the tile name you found at Lowe’s. Do you remember the name of the tile. Maybe our local Lowe’s do not have it in stock!
Thanks for sharing all your great ideas.
Thank you so much! I will send you an email now with the info on the tile!
What is the name of your counter top?
What is the name of your granite counter?
The chalkboard was a really cool idea. We just put one up and so far so good. We just refinished our wood floors and I know it’s silly but I was worried that somehow the chalk would ruin it. I have a 2-year-old who is still learning that chalk is for the board and sidewalk only haha but it honestly hasn’t done a thing to the floors so far! Plus, my son is now thoroughly entertained throughout the day and I have a beautiful new kitchen decoration.
Farmhouse kitchens are in trend these days! Keep sharing!
