Our Budget Home Office Makeover // Small Office Ideas for Him
Today, I am sharing a reveal of our small, budget home office makeover. You can read about how we got started on this project over here. You may be working from home these days. So, now is the time to spruce up your home office and create a space that you love to work in!
Getting Started

You may remember back in late May that I shared our plans for a home office makeover. This particular office is where my husband works. He has always worked from home but although he did travel quite a bit. Now that my husband works exclusively from home these days, I wanted to makeover his home office space. The room was not in the worst shape, but at the same time, it was one room that we really had not touched in several years.
Now, you also might remember that I had plans to complete this budget home office makeover by Father’s Day. Well, that did not happen! We got a slow start to the project and then some of the items we ordered took a long time to arrive. Plus, we had a mishap or two. (I’ll fill you in on that in a moment).
First, let me remind you about our home office makeover plan.

We were inspired by this home office photo. Beautiful right? Well we did not exactly have the budget or the room to create a space like this. But, we were able to pull out some key elements. Here is the mood board we created for our small home office.
We already had black desk and some accessories. But, several of the items we had to purchase.
Black Accent Wall
The first thing we did for the home office was to paint the wall black. We used Behr Limousine Leather in their Marquee Line. It was the first time I have used Behr paint and I was very happy with the results.
The paint went on smooth and I probably could have gotten away with one coat of paint. But, I had enough paint left to do two solid coats.
Painting a wall can make a big impact without spending a lot of money. I think that this black wall provides a nice focal point in the room. When, you are walking down our hallway, you get a nice view of the wall.
Leather Desk Chair
There were a few things we needed to purchase for the home office including a desk chair. I was looking for a brown leather desk chair and I found several options. However, desk chairs can be a wide range of prices. So we decided to pick one right in the middle.
My husband really wanted a comfortable chair, which I completely understand! He requested an office chair that had arm rests too. We found a brown leather office chair that is very comfortable!

New Lighting
One thing this home office did not have was good lighting! First, I added this black task lamp (that we already owned) to my husband’s desk.
Then, I bought this farmhouse/industrial ceiling light to replace an old light fixture. You can not beat the price on this wood and metal ceiling light. It is really well made and easy to assemble. I could not believe my husband had swapped out the ceiling lights in a matter of minutes!
The new light makes a big difference in this small office both from a decor aspect but also from a functional one!
Neutral Window Shades
One of my favorite parts of the office is the new window shades. I’ve seen Nesting with Grace rave about this blinds as she uses them all over her home.
These blinds are very budget friendly and there are a lot of different color options. (We have the Whitewash color). Now, I want to add these shades to other windows in our home.
The shades block out just the right amount of light while also providing privacy.
Open Wall Shelving
Our open shelving DIY was the biggest pain point of this home office makeover! We stumbled on a few issues with these shelves.
First, we purchased wood that was a little more expensive than we wanted. We incorrectly read a pricing sign that said $8 and we took it to mean for the entire piece not per foot! So, we ended up spending a little more than we wanted on basic wood pieces. In the end, the wood worked out really well because they were really solid pieces. Although the pieces were so solid that they were very heavy for hanging on a wall!
This is the wood stain that we painted on the wood pieces.
Our second big issue with the wall shelves was finding the right kind of brackets! Originally, I purchased these beautiful antique gold wall brackets and “patiently” waited for them to arrive. Once we got them, we immediately realized the brackets would not work as the wood was too wide to fit in the openings.
So then, we searched and searched for the same colored wall brackets. I could not find any similar brackets so then I remembered I could spray paint brackets to match the color I wanted! Here is the spray paint color we used.
It was such an easy solution that I wish I would have started with this idea!
Pro tip: Hand paint the metal screws after you install the wall brackets as the brackets tend to get scratched up during installation.
All in the Details
The home office makeover really came together when we added all of the small details back into the room. Because the office is my husband’s, I wanted to keep the room personalized to him. He has a lot of fun sports and other fun items, so I found a way to incorporate them all on the shelves.
That plant on the shelf has been going strong for 20 years! The one plant we have been able to keep alive!
How We Saved
Overall, we made this budget home office makeover possible by spending money on just a few items. Originally, we planned on purchasing a new rug, but we were able to make do with the rug that was in the room.
I gathered up decor from around the house plus my husband’s collectibles to decorate the room.
Do not let a small budget stop you from making changes to your home. Even if you pick just a few key things to change, you can make a big decor impact!

It looks sooo good! I love the black wall!
I love the space, Jaclyn! I’ve got to say, I think the accent wall is my favorite feature. Isn’t it crazy how much of a difference a little paint can do?! The overall look is totally masculine and I’m sure the hubby is loving it.
I really like the shelves and how you set them up. My office needs a makeover!
You did an amazing job Jaclyn- love the chair and the contrast of it with the wall. Those shelves are perfect too!
That turned out great!
Looks great, Jaclyn!!
