Are you looking for a screen free phone for you kids? Do you want to be able to connect with them but not have your kids attached to another screen? I’m sharing our review of the Relay Go and why it might be a perfect fit for your kids!
Screen Free Smartphone Alternative
Last week I mentioned that we have partnered up with Relay Go and today I’m excited to share more details on this screen free communication device! This palm sized communication gadget allows kids to connect with family and friends without the distraction of a screen!
While the Relay Go is an option for anyone, it is a perfect fit for kids who are not ready for a smartphone but still could benefit from some type of a communication device. The Relay Go allows the user to communicate with up to five people and those people do not need a Relay Go device! Parents and family download an app on their phones to connect with the Relay. The device works a bit like a walkie talkie as you just have to push a button to connect. However, it is a closed network, so no one can call the device that is not one of the approved (five) channels.
What is awesome about the Relay Go is that it works on 4G, so you can be anywhere in the U.S. and talk to each other. My husband was able to talk to my son while he away on a business trip last week!
There are five different channels that you can set up with different contacts. You can even create a group channel! So, one of my son’s channels is a group chat with both my husband and I. If my son selects that channel, both my husband and I will be contacted.
Features of the Relay Go
While the Relay Go does not have texting or games, there are a few fun features! First, the best feature is actually a safety feature as it comes with GPS tracking! You can go on the app and track where the device (& your child) is located! I love this!
There are a couple of fun channels including a translate option. You can say a word into the Relay Go and it will translate the word into over a dozen languages! Other features include a daily joke, music and an echo effect (have fun with the sound of your voice!).
Additional benefits of the Relay Go include a long battery life! Our Relay Go lasts about three days before needing a new charge! The Relay Go is also built to last for hard play and it is water resistant!! It was definitely made with kids in mind.
Relay Go Review
I’ll be honest, that the Relay Go has been a perfect fit for my son! He loves gadgets but we are definitely not ready to equip him with a smartphone! He has enough opportunities for screen time with his gaming devices, T.V, etc! We are doing our best efforts to limit the amount of screen time for our kids!
This device has been a GREAT way for my son to be in touch with my husband who travels a bit for work. I like that my son can feel a sense of independence and control with managing his own device and being able to contact us when he wants. I have enjoyed his sweet calls when he is walking home from the bus or he is over at a friend’s house! While he did not have any communication device before the Relay Go, it is amazing how much we are now relying on it to get in touch with him when we are not with him!
I appreciate that there is not a texting option! It is nice to communicate the “old fashioned” way by talking to each other instead of texting!!
Is the Relay Go right for your family?
While the Relay Go has been a great fit for our family, you will want to consider if it makes sense for you. This device seems like a nice option for kids 5-12, but it really depends on your child’s level of responsibility. I don’t think my six year old would be ready for his own device unless it didn’t leave home. Also, some kids might only be willing to consider a smartphone for the “coolness” factor. My almost ten year old knows he is not getting a phone anytime soon, so he is perfectly happy with this screen free device.
The Relay Go does not require any contracts and is only $9.99 service fee per month! You can cancel at any time!

Cute idea!
This looks awesome! We don’t yet have kids, but I’ve always worried about how to communicate with them without getting them a phone too early! So glad to see there are options ?
Wow – I didn’t know this was even a thing! How cool! I don’t have kids yet, but it is something I think about quite a bit – I grew up playing outside and reading, and I want my kids to experience the same… not just stuck in front of an electronic device!!
I have a friend who I feel like this would be great for with her kids. I love that it’s like walkie talkie but works anywhere!
This is amazing! I had no idea that something like this even existed.
