With more and more people working at home these days, many of us have had to create makeshift office spaces. If you are lucky, you might even have a dedicated home office space. Today, I am sharing budget friendly ideas for a small home office makeover.

Creating a Small Home Office Space
Almost everyone I know is working at home these days. Most people I talk with are really enjoying working at home too! But, one thing that always comes up is that they don’t have a great work space set up. My husband has been working from home for over 10 years and he is lucky enough to have a dedicated home office.
Still, even with his own space, he certainly gets interrupted throughout the day, especially with all of us home right now! He has loved working from home and we love having him close by. Over this quarantine, I have made little changes in just about every room of the house except for my husband’s home office.
The main reason I haven’t touched his office is because he is always in it. So, I decided, just in time for Father’s Day, to give his home office a small makeover. I am sharing my plan with you. Then in a few weeks, when it is hopefully all done, I will share the home office update with you!
My husband’s new office will look no where close to this good. But, this dreamy home office from HGTV is certainly goals!

Our Small Home Office Makeover Plan
It does not matter the size of your home office (even if it’s a corner of the house). What matters is that the space allows you to get your work done and that is is an enjoyable place to be–considering you are there for most of your day!
While my husband’s office is not in bad shape, it is one of those rooms that we made a few changes to a few years ago and then never touched it again. It could just use some TLC.
So, let me share our plan.
Home Office Essentials
There are some essentials that every home office needs including a desk and a good office. chair. Fortunately, my husband has this solid desk in black that we bought from Pottery Barn over 10 years ago. But, he does need a good office chair.
Since we are drawing inspiration from spaces like this, we are looking for a lighter leather desk chair.

Here are some light leather desk chairs for consideration:
This light brown swivel chair is a medium price point. But, my husband wants a chair with arm rests.
This other option is really nice, although not very tall of a chair.
I am leaning towards this chair, which would certainly be the most expensive purchase for the room. You can spend a lot of money on a desk chair!
This brown leather chair is similar to the previous option but half the cost! This would be the most economical desk chair option.
Rugs and Paint Colors
The next thing we are deciding on is a new rug. Currently, there is a creme and light gray rug in the room. It has taken a beating as our pup spends a lot of time in the office. I would like something more durable that would hold up to a lot of pet traffic.
These are the two rugs I am thinking about:
This Silver Speckled Vintage Rug.
I also like this tradition Gray Honeycomb pattern rug.
The home office is currently painted Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. We will paint an accent wall in the Benjamin Moore Black Panther.
Home Office Wall Decor
The fun part of the home office makeover is tying everything together with decor and accessories. One home office decor l piece I am most excited about is a personalized map from Mapiful. I was recently contacted by Mapiful and was gifted a personalized map. These maps are so cool. It is a perfect gift for Father’s Day or an anniversary!
I made a map for the city my husband and I met.. The map has not arrived yet, but I will share the details soon. I picked a dark background to complement the dark accent wall.
There are a ton of different styles and colors to choose from Mapiful.

Another key wall element for the space is a set of wood shelves. I am debating on staining our own wood shelves as a money saving option. Although this wood shelf set is fairly inexpensive and ready to install.
Either route we take on the shelves, I have ordered this shelf brackets. I like how they slip on to the wood and look like they are a custom shelf piece.
Window Treatments
Currently we have a inexpensive white wood window blinds. Honestly, they collect a lot of dust and are tough to clean.
We want an updated look for the windows and we ordered these white wash colored bamboo shades. I am wondering if I should have selected a slighter darker color but we have not installed them on the windows yet. Nesting with Grace has these exact shades in her home and they look so good.
Lighting
Lighting is definitely important for a home office! If you lack good overhead lighting, you might also want a lamp or two!
We plan to swap out the current light fixture with this wood and metal ceiling fixture.
These are expensive and stylish light fixtures for the home office too.
This school house style office lamp is in my office. So I am going to swap out this lamp and put it in my husband’s office. It will fit better into his space.
Home Office Accessories
It is the little home decor details that really make a room feel cozy and put together. I always like to “shop our house” first before I run out to Homegoods to buy a bunch of new things. A few great pieces can go along way to tie the room together.
I think a real or a faux plant always looks good in a home office.
Plus, you need a few organization pieces to corral paper and desk supplies.

We have some final decisions on the Home Office Makeover to finalize, so that we can put the room all together. This week, I plan to start painting and I will also order the remaining items. I hope to get this home office makeover finished around Father’s Day.
