Valentine’s Day Play Dough Recipe

Over the weekend the kids and I started working on Valentine cards for their class parties. Throughout the years, we have exchanged many different kinds of Valentine’s Day favors, from Dollar Store character favorites to homemade varieties. If time allows, we try to make our own. I love seeing the kids pour their hearts into cards for their friends. We are always looking for non-candy options.  My preschooler and I decided on homemade play dough for his class party.  So, today,  I am sharing a Valentine’s Day play dough recipe! I’ve also created a printable gift tag that can be used to make play dough party favors.

It is super easy to make homemade play dough and once you make it once, you may never go back to store bought! It smells better and is made with all edible and non toxic ingredients. You can have so much fun with the colors and smells (using essential oils).

Homemade Play Dough Recipe

[recipe title=”Homemade Play Dough”  time=”10 mins” difficulty=”easy”]

1 Cups White Flour (I don’t recommend whole wheat as the texture will be grainy)

1/4 Cup Salt

2 rounded Tablespoons of Cream of Tartar

1 Cup Water

1 Tablespoon Canola/Coconut Oil

Food Coloring*

Essential Oil (optional)

Directions: Add all ingredients (except essential oil) into a medium saucepan on medium – low heat. Stir constantly until the consistency becomes thick and the lumps are gone. Remove from heat and let cool. Once cooled, roll out onto a lightly floured mat and knead the dough until it becomes soft. The dough should not be sticky (add a little more flour to the dough if it sticky). Be sure to keep kneading the dough until it is smooth. Add essential oil if desired (rose or cinnamon bark would smell great!)

*Gel Food Coloring is recommended for vibrant colors.

Some additional tips:

  • Cream of Tartar can be expensive at the grocery store, so I definitely recommend buying in bulk on Amazon or at Costco.
  • You can double or triple the recipe –but I recommend starting with one batch the first time you make it to be sure you have the consistency just right.
  • Gel food coloring will provide the most vibrant colors. We used some of our more natural food dyes and the dough wasn’t as colorful as when I used regular/non organic food dye.

Once, the dough is cooled and kneaded, you can divide for individual packages. I’ve made it quick and easy for you to package these with  Valentine Printable gift tags! Use some fun twine or ribbon and plastic gift bags and you are all set! It would be super cute to include a heart shaped cookie cutter as part of the package!
